The front entrance foyer from 312 Sherbrooke Est. Columns are hexagonal with faces varying irregularly from 9 to 12 inches. Currently occupied by Gender Mannequins.
Typical column dimensions approx 17 inches across a hexagonal cross section.

Interior view from entrance at 334 Terrasse St.Denis. Note floor in lower right corner was recently poured by current owner. Columns are square and 19 inches on a side. Visible exterior rebar was 1 to 1 1/4" dia. Original slabs ranged in thickness from 17 to 19 inches thick.

I received an 800 page history of Lockwood Greene and Co. today, and got some clues that may expand our resources. An engineer named Chester Allen joined Lockwood Greene (Boston) in 1910, after working with Sanford E. Thompson on the book "Reinforced Concrete in Factory Construction," for Portland Cement. The title sounds pretty relevant, and it's first edition was published in 1908. I checked the CCA's catalog, and it seems like they have it in its 7th edition:

Hi all,

So today Marie and I (kate) went to the McGill library and had a scan through the 1915 'Construction: A Journal for the Architectural Engineering & Contracting Interests of Canada'. Although there were no major article dedicated to concrete there was lots of little tid bits of info about where our architects could have gotten some of their references and information from.

We found that at the beginning of each Journal publication they had a bit of an overview of events that had taken place all over the country, for example mention of the Feb 15 Quebec Association of Architects Trade Show. Also in the Dec. issue they had a few pages at the back that were more or less a caption of the entire year and referred specifically to the completion of particular buildings. We scanned a few pgs and I am going to try and figure out how to post them so bare with me.

Marie also put in a request for a number of the other micro-films. From 1908 to 1914 and then a few other years specific to our buildings (I believe). They are at the reference desk in the Blackader Lauterman Lib. The films have to be pulled from storage so we will let you know when they are available if you are interested in going to take a look at them. I think it would be worth while and also they are super fun to scan/scroll through!

p.s. I forgot to mention that I found an envelop of old b/w photos of streets and industrial sites taken in and around Montreal. There was a photo of the Redpath, Ford, Molson, Seagram Distillers and NCR. Urban Plan Collection at McGill

Okay, so not the greatest news.

I have been searching the urban plan collection at McGill and haven't come up with a great deal of relevant material. The main issue being is that the database and collection of reports and plans for rural and urban areas dates from the late 1950s to the present. Not so great for reinforced concrete buildings from the 1900s to the 1950s.

I'm going to keep at it and let you know what I come up with.

Below is an edited list of books that I found at The Université de Montréal architecture library. I tried to choose books that seem to be of historic significance and∕or are directly related to construction with concrete.

It is interesting to note that the book by Francis S. Onderdonk , titled The Ferro-Concrete Style (1928), is very focused on designing with concrete, not mere function. There are color illustrations on how to paint on concrete and several churches are featured in the book.

Panoramic view of the Montreal portion of the Lachine Canal, 1896. This view clearly shows the diversity of functions around the canal, depicting a sugar refinery, a rolling stock plant, a paint factory, a textile plant, and flour mills. It also suggests why the Lachine canal was nicknamed "Smokey Valley." Note that the only part of the photograph without smoke is on the right where the St. Gabriel hydraulic lots were located.
